Your Kombucha Questions Answered

If you've ever tried to convince your mate to try kombucha, well, first off, thank you. You're the real MVP and we appreciate you. But secondly, you'll probably have been asked quite a few questions around "what is it", "how is it made", "what does it taste like" - the list goes on.

So, we thought we'd compile said list into a big ol' Q&A, arming you with the knowledge to head into the Battle Of Convincing Your Mates To Just Bloody Try Remedy Kombucha Because It's Actually Really Good.

Let's dive into your kombucha questions, answered.

What is kombucha?

Kombucha is fermented tea. It's crafted using tea, SCOBY and sugar, which is left to ferment into what eventually becomes kombucha.

At Remedy, we use organic green and black tea leaves for our brews. We combine this with organic sugar and SCOBY in small, huggable-sized pots and pop them in our temperature-controlled brew room for 30 days at 30 degrees. During this time, all the sugar is brewed out and converted to organic acids, leaving a brew filled with goodness.

What does kombucha taste like?

A classic kombucha is fizzy and a little tart, giving off a similar vibe to a sparkling apple cider without the sugary sweetness.

The cool thing about kombucha is it tastes different depending on what flavour you pick. We pride ourselves on making the best tasting booch goin' round, with a huge range to tickle the tastebuds of any Jane and Joe. Ginger Lemon has a bit of that classic tartness but is balanced with a hit of ginger, whereas Wild Berry has a crisp sweetness that tastes like summer in a bottle.

What are the benefits of kombucha?

Generally speaking, people tend to drink kombucha because they think it's good for their gut health. This is because kombucha contains live cultures, which are good for your gut because they increase the diversity of your gut flora (AKA the good bugs that live in your gut). They work together to get things working as they should, and can also prevent the opportunistic growth of bad bugs that make you sick.

On top of live cultures, kombucha also contains tea polyphenols. These are also known as antioxidants, and are naturally occurring in the organic green and black tea we use to make our kombucha. They can help your body fight illness by scavenging for cell-damaging free radicals in the body.

And on top of live cultures AND polyphenols, the sugar in kombucha is turned into these cool things called "organic acids" in the fermentation process. Organic acids can help prevent overgrowth of bad bugs in your gut, provide an energy source for the GOOD bacteria in your gut, regulate appetite, stabilise blood sugar levels, and regulate cholesterol. Pretty cool, hey!

Is there alcohol in kombucha?

Kombucha is generally non-alcoholic. Like many fermented foods and drinks, a trace amount of alcohol can be produced during the natural fermentation process. We can't speak for all kombucha brands, but we thoroughly test each and every batch to make sure Remedy Kombucha meets the national standards for non-alcoholic drinks.

Is kombucha safe for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding?

Remedy Kombucha is safe for our pregnant and breastfeeding booch lovers, but we can't speak on behalf of all the kombuchas out there. Not all kombucha is created equal.

We opt for a traditional 30-day brew, fermenting tea, sugar and SCOBY in a 30 degree room. This brews out all the sugar and leaves us with a 100% natural, no sugar, non-alcoholic brew that is safe for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. We test every batch to make sure of it.

Not all kombucha brands follow the same process, and the difference in brew makes a big difference. If in doubt, always ask the question. Or just drink Remedy!

Who makes the best kombucha?

We might be a teeny bit biased, but we make a darn good brew (if we do say so ourselves). The rest of Aus seems to agree with us though, because we've found ourselves at the top spot of booch brands in the country. From our humble beginnings on Sarah and Emmet's kitchen counter back in the day, it's a bit wild to think how far we've come!
